Grand Banks

My latest project is Grand Banks, a seasonal oyster bar on deck of the historic F/V Sherman Zwicker. Docked at Hudson River Park’s Pier 25 in Tribeca, the 142 foot sailboat is a museum quality example of traditional boat building and the largest wooden vessel in New York City.

The project was conceived and developed with Mark Firth, founder of Diner and Marlow & Sons, my brother Miles, who is my partner in the development firm Arts & Leisure, and Adrien Gallo, our director of operations; and designed in collaboration with Eric Cheong head of design for Ace Hotels.

Operating in conjunction with the not-for-profit Maritime Foundation, Grand Banks presents on-board exhibitions on maritime history and a curated lecture series with notable speakers on topics ranging from seafaring culture to aquatic sustainability.

We will be opening in the next few weeks.

PINC.US 2011 Retired

I'm shutting down the most recent version of my website. It lasted two years, pretty good in web-time. I'll be launching the beta version of my new site ASAP. I think this will be the 6th edition, but I'll have to check on that.

Expanded Music Project

I'm excited to be a part of the Expanded Music Project, an event curated by my good friend Drura Parrish and featuring some amazing talents. I'm designing a roller rink in an art gallery. More interestingly I'm designing what could possibly be the sleaziest dj booth of all time for Juan Atkins, the inventor of techno. It's a tesselated, irregular pentagonal antiprism upholstered in sparkle gold vinyl with a maroon carpeted interior.  And I'm making a few chandeliers.

Bureau V at Pecha Kucha

Peter Zuspan and I will speak at Pecha Kucha The Sound Dimension on November 30. Also presenting are our good friends Mike Skinner of ARUP and Ben Rubin of Ear Studio, as well as other cool people like the band Fiery Furnaces and the writer / culture guru Matt Mason.

New York #10
November 30, 2010 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm | Shangri La Studio
100 Sutton St. Greenpoint, Brooklyn

From Pecha Kucha:

“The Sound Dimension”
In the early Oughts, the ubiquitous access to three-dimensional visualization technologies liberated designers form the limitations and legacy of two-dimensional representation. Architects feverishly took to these advancements applying them towards spatial applications, and with these tools, critiquing data and reinterpreting form and surface quickly became old-hat exercises in the initial, more free-wheeling schematic design process. These technologies nurtured a significant advancement in building a more multi-layered, responsive, and dynamic approach to visualization.
Not content to stop at 3 dimensions designers are exploring how to integrate in their creative vocabulary and toolset new elements for representation. What elements of inspiration are now begin explored, adopted, integrated? Specifically how is visualization inspired by other dimensions and senses such as sound and in particular music? In what ways can the immateriality of sound influence and translate into the world of physical design?
Pecha Kucha #10 will serve as an exploration of how sound, a seemingly visual abstraction (or distraction), can serve as the foundation to informing, visualizing, or connecting to architectural and graphic space.

Updates

I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had time to post any work on this site. We have four new comissions underway, a jazz and classical concert hall in Brooklyn (site above), an artists retreat in the Nevada desert, an installation in Times Square and a pop-up store for Fashion Week. We’ve also got an upcoming show of new drawings at Espeis. I’m going to try to stay a bit more on top of this site along the way…
