Ari Berman Editorial in the Sunday New York Times

Vote

Ari Berman has a great editorial in this Sunday’s New York Times:

Boot the Blue Dogs
By ARI BERMAN
Published: October 23, 2010
IN 2008, Barack Obama’s presidential campaign seemed to rewrite all the rules in electoral politics and herald a new progressive era in America. Democrats assembled a huge Congressional majority and, in the euphoria that followed the historic election, were poised to enact sweeping change. However, despite some notable successes the stimulus package, health care reform, tighter rules for the financial industry things have not gone according to plan. Just two years later, Democrats face a bad economy, a skeptical public, a re-energized Republican Party and a coming avalanche of losses in the midterm elections.
What happened? One important explanation is that divisions inside the Democratic coalition, which held together during the 2008 campaign, have come spilling out into the open. Conservative Democrats have opposed key elements of the president’s agenda, while liberal Democrats have howled that their majority is being hijacked by a rogue group of predominantly white men from small rural states. President Obama himself appears caught in the middle, unable to satisfy the many factions inside his party’s big tent.

Wors MFG

Works MFG

I met Aleksey, the owner of Works MFG under extreme circumstances. I needed the helm of my boat welded on a Friday night at 7pm and done by morning at the latest. They stayed open late and took care of it it in less than 30 minutes. When I was there I discovered that they have designed and built places like Matchless and Smith and Mills among others. Great People. Check out their work here.

Cruciform Power-Strip Makes Vampires Smile

Wired Magazine features Higher Power by Alexander Pincus

Via Wired, written by Charlie Sorrel:

I LOVE THE surprised-looking faces on this otherwise sinister crucifix-shaped surge-protecting power-strip. I imagine thrusting it into the face of a passing vampire (who one of my stupid flat-mates has guilelessly invited in) and seeing both hysterical fear and mild fondness battling in his yellowing, undead eyes. I also imagine dragging all my cord-tangled gadgets across the room to do it, but still, at least I’m safe.
And that’s not all the “Power/Strip” will save you from. The blurb, from designer Alexander Pincus, promises “comprehensive protection from evil, power surges, and AC contamination.”
The cross-shaped also keeps the bulky chargers away from the smaller-plugged cables, letting you plug in more items at once. Don’t fill up all the outlets, though, or you’ll never get to see a vampire smile.
